National Honor Society, a national organization for high school students, is designed to promote and to recognize four traits: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.  At Crete High School, members are chosen annually and are inducted into the chapter at a ceremony held in the spring.  This year's tapping for membership in the Cardinal Chapter will take place on Tuesday, April 19 with induction on April 21.  The following notice concerning the selection process is published for the information of any interested person.

New members of the Cardinal Chapter are chosen once a year during the second semester by a council consisting of five faculty members appointed annually by the principal.  Only members of the sophomore and junior classes who have been in attendance at Crete High School for one semester are eligible to be chosen.

The selection process begins with a determination of the student's cumulative grade point average.  Any sophomore or junior with a cumulative scholastic GPA of at least 3.50  meets the SCHOLARSHIP requirement and is eligible for further consideration as a potential member.  Each student who is academically eligible is asked to fill out an Activities Form which provides information on membership and/or offices held in other organizations.  This form is not a guarantee for membership, but a failure to return the Activities Form constitutes removal from consideration for membership.  The Activities Form is used by the Faculty Council to evaluate the SERVICE, LEADERSHIP, and CHARACTER components of the National Honor Society requirement.

The selection of members to the Cardinal Chapter shall be by a majority vote of the five member faculty council.  The NHS advisor is present at these meetings but is not a voting member.  The faculty council shall determine the selection procedure.  In the past they have rated candidates' leadership, service, and character qualities on a 4.0 scale using input from the Activities Form completed by the candidate as well as surveys from classroom teachers.  These marks are averaged together with their GPA to assist faculty council members in making their decision on which way to vote.  However, selection is based on the vote of the faculty council members and not the averaged score.  If a candidate receives a majority vote, he or she is tapped for membership.

While every effort is made to make the selection process as fair and objective as possible, the decision of the faculty council is final.  Candidates who are not selected but who wish to have their files reviewed for computational accuracy must request this action of the principal within five school days following the induction ceremony.  All selection procedures comply with the National Honor Society Constitution and the Cardinal Chapter Bylaws.

Students who are chosen for membership are reviewed periodically and must continue to exhibit the standards for which they were selected.  If a member is found deficient in one or more qualities, the Faculty Council determines the consequences, which may range from probation to expulsion from the chapter.  Once a student is expelled, he/she is never again eligible for membership.  Selection for National Honor Society is the highest honor a high school can bestow upon a student, but students who are chosen must be prepared to maintain the high standards for which they were selected.

NHS members must also meet chapter membership requirements. All members must attend every chapter meeting, with one allowed absence. Members must also participate in half of the chapter's scheduled activities. These activities include, but are not limited to the following: Concession stand sales, Homecoming window painting and cleanup, worker auction, candy sales, Christmas caroling, and helping with the blood drive. All NHS members must also complete 15 hours of community service, which must be approved by the chapter advisor. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in probation or expulsion from the chapter.

Any patron of the Crete School District who would like further information concerning National Honor Society should write or call the Cardinal Chapter Advisor, Ms. Kathy Boyes, at the high school.
