Karen Williams - School Psychologist

Karen Williams, school psychologist at Crete Intermediate School

As a school psychologist, Karen Williams understands the struggles many of her students face because she faced them, too. Karen left El Salvador at age 16 and arrived in Lexington as a high school sophomore. She had to adjust to a new community, new education system and new language.

After being enrolled in all English learner classes in 10th grade, she was enrolled in all general education classes, including some Advanced Placement classes, the following year. She credits positive relationships, role models, coaches and mentors for helping her learn English and involvement in activities for exposing her to more English vocabulary.

A school psychologist with CPS since 2011, Karen has worked at Crete Intermediate School full time since 2018. She enjoys the mix of innocence and curiosity in the third- through fifth-graders and finds creative ways to provide additional support outside school, especially for those who’ve experienced trauma or come from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Karen would like to create more opportunities for students to mentor each other and for newcomer parents to learn about the American education system. She loves working in a district that prioritizes students’ social, emotional and behavioral needs and is proud of its diverse student body.
