Welcome to 2023

Welcome to 2023!  It has been a great start to our second semester.  On January 3 and 4, all staff members were engaged in preparing for and ensuring a smooth start to the new year.  At CPS, we take the safety of our staff and student seriously.  Mr. Cole, our middle school principal, also serves as the Director of Safety for CPS.  On January 4, Mr. Cole organized safety and security training with the I Love You Guys, a national leader in school safety.  Our crisis response team, threat assessment team, all administrators, and the Cardinal Welcome Center staff participated in the training.  We were fortunate also to have several community organizations join us, including The City of Crete, the Crete Police Department, the Saline County Sheriff's Office, Crete Area Medical Center, Saline County Emergency Response, Doane University, and the Nebraska Department of Education.

Communication is something we are constantly striving to improve.  Our safety training highlighted that we need to communicate better with our parents, guardians, and community regarding our standard response protocols (the actions we take in an emergency).  We use five key protocols, so I plan to cover one each week for the next five weeks.  The first on the list of our protocols is HOLD.  When a HOLD is announced, all students remain in their classroom, and any students in the hallways move to the closest classroom.  When a HOLD is called, it is business as usual in the classroom.  A HOLD can be used for a variety of reasons.  If a student gets ill in the hallway, a locker is searched, etc.  A HOLD does not always mean a tragic situation.  A HOLD is used to keep the hallways clear.  Lastly, regardless of the protocol being used, all of our exterior and interior classroom doors are shut and locked at all times.

Tonight is a busy night for Cardinal Athletics.  Boys and Girls basketball host York.  Tonight the Booster Club will be recognized for their incredibly generous gift of $60,000 to Crete High Athletics.  Six new members will be inducted into the Crete High Hall of Fame at halftime of the boy's game.  And the Cardinal Beef Council will be onsite tonight selling raffle tickets for your chance to win a beef prize package valued at over $150.  Come out and honor our inductees, support our current athletes, and see what the future holds.
