Discipline program ensures positive learning environment

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBiS) is an evidence-based three-tiered framework to improve and integrate all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. PBiS creates schools where all students succeed.

Because a significant part of students’ academic success correlates directly to their behavior, Crete Elementary has implemented a schoolwide discipline program.

The program uses positive behavioral supports to encourage appropriate student behavior; create a safe, positive learning environment; and provide consistency in all areas of the school.

During the first few weeks of school, students are taught about these valuable behavior traits and how to earn tickets for exhibiting appropriate behaviors. The hope is that being respectful, safe and responsible becomes contagious.

Safe Seat Process

The school has also implemented a Safe Seat Process, which provides consistency and support for teachers and students while allowing learning to continue with minimal disruption. Safe Seat procedures include:

1) The student receives two warnings. On the third warning, if the student does not correct the behavior, the student goes to the classroom Safe Seat.

  • Used for correcting behavior, calming down and processing.

  • No parent phone call is made.

2) The student receives two more warnings. On the third warning, if the student does not correct the behavior, the student goes to a Safe Seat outside the classroom.

  • Used for correcting behavior, calming down and processing.

  • A phone call is made by the teacher.

3) The student receives two more warnings. On the third warning, if the student does not correct the behavior, the student goes to the office.

  • A phone call is made by the administration.

4) Students who display aggressive behavior will be sent to the office automatically.

5) Students will return to class once they have successfully completed a “Think Sheet,” complied with directions and processed with the teacher.
